1st Ave Food Access Support

New Pi Cedar Rapids July 24 Category: Stronger+Together

Many of our shoppers may be following updates about the Moundview and Wellington Heights 1st Ave store closure, in the Cedar Rapids area. Local residents in this area who travel predominately by foot or rely on public transportation, have very limited options or access at this time to fresh groceries.

As part of our Co-op principles and values, supporting food access is important to us. Each week, we partner with local food banks and organizations in both Linn and Johnson Counties as one way to support food access in our communities.

This month at the Co-op, we’re increasing our partnership support with HACAP to help residents in the affected Moundview and Wellington Heights areas.

Through HACAP and their Mobile Food Bank, we’ll be supplying extra food donations both from the store and from Co-op shoppers who want to contribute to our HACAP dropbox at the front of the store, as well as a monetary donation and Change for Change member donations at the registers of our Cedar Rapids New Pioneer location.

We’ll also waive our grocery delivery fee for residents in the Garfield, Polk, and Johnson school districts.

If you would like to support this effort, there are several ways you can get involved through the Co-op or HACAP listed below:

  • Round up for HACAP at the registers (New Pi Cedar Rapids)
  • Donate extra food items to our collection point located at the front of the store.
  • Consider donating directly to HACAP, who does the ongoing work every day to increase food access in the corridor: Click here to donate
  • Volunteer with HACAP: Click here for volunteering information
